1 small onion chopped fine 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1/4 cup flour 2 1/2 cups milk 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 5 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced To make the sauce, cook onion and garlic in butter or margarine until tender but not brown. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Add milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes more. Stir in the nutmeg. In a 2 quart buttered casserole dish, ladle a little of the sauce on the bottom, place half of the sliced potatoes. Cover with half the sauce. Repeat layers. Bake covered in 350 F. oven for 45 minutes. Uncover, bake about 30 minutes more or till potatoes are done and the top is browned. |
