2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 6 slices of bread butter or margarine for frying In a wide, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Heat a lage skillet or griddle. Melt enough butter or margarine to coat the bottom. Dip bread slices in egg mixture, one at a time, making sure to soak each side. Hold bread slice above bowl to allow the excess egg mixture to drain off and then place in the hot, buttered skillet. Repeat with as many slices as will fit in the pan at one time. Cook over medium heat and flip the slices when they are browned to your liking. Remove to a warm plate in the oven, or serve immediately. Notes: A thick sliced day old bread works best. Thin fresh bread will be soggy. Margarine is better for frying as butter tends to burn. Optional add-ins: You can add a little sugar to the egg mixture if you like your french toast a little sweeter. A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg may also be added for additional flavor. Vanilla extract (1/2 to 1 tsp.) makes a nice addition as well. |
